Are Organic/Natural Soap Bars Better Than the Bigger Brands? - Mr. Hygiene

Are Organic/Natural Soap Bars Better Than the Bigger Brands?

Did you really have to ask?

Actually, it’s a valid question. My whole life, I bought soaps from Dove, Olay, Old Spice, Suave— you know the deal. And the reason I chose these brands was because they were “trusted” and always caught the eye. They’ve got a nice logo, a pleasant scent, and a pretty picture to go with it. So why wouldn’t you go with them? Maybe if you care about the things that really matter…

You’ll see every soap listing things like “No Parabens,” “No Phthalates,” “No Sulfates,” and “Naturally Derived” on the side of the bottle, so you think, “Yeah, this looks good.” But if you take the extra step of researching what’s actually in these products, you’ll find a list of over 30 ingredients, almost all of which you have no clue about. Here’s an indication of what that means:

It’s not great.

As you can see, Dove's complex mix of synthetics can be harsher on the skin.

Mr. Hygiene’s simpler, natural formula offers a gentler, more nourishing alternative. If you want to learn more about why natural ingredients are better and all the other ingredients are unnecessary, keep reading.

Here’s the truth you won’t hear often: Soap isn’t complicated. I’ll show you how it works:

  • Fats/Oils: Provide the base of the soap.
  • Lye (Sodium Hydroxide): Reacts with the fats/oils to create soap in a process called saponification.
  • Water: Helps dissolve the lye and mix it with fats/oils.
  • Optional Additives: Enhance the soap’s properties, like adding fragrance, color, exfoliation, or extra moisture.

So now you may be thinking, if there are only four parts, why is there a list of 20 ingredients in the soap I use? Here’s why: To make something that smells, looks, and feels a certain way, you need to add multiple things to achieve it. The problem is that doing so often compromises the natural quality of the product and can make it potentially harmful. It’s trading user-friendliness for quality. So if that answers the question:

Yes, organic and natural soaps are definitely better for you than the “big brands.”
